Dr. Terry Metzger joined Rincon Valley Union School District in 2012 as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. While her primary focus is professional development and district-wide implementation of the Common Core State Standards, she is responsible for the oversight of many district programs including science labs, physical education, services for English Learners, school libraries, art docents, summer school, gifted and talented education, consulting teachers, beginning teacher support, and a variety of instructional programs such as Lexia and Accelerated Reader. This year, Terry and the curriculum team are also working on new benchmark tests and report cards that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
Before arriving in Rincon Valley, Terry worked in the California Central Valley for over 23 years. She has enjoyed a wide variety of experiences in her career, beginning with early childhood and after school programs, before teaching in middle and elementary school settings and ultimately serving as a school site administrator for 14 years. Terry has also worked as a Project Adventure leader, Principal-Coach for Sacramento County Office of Education, and guest lecturer at CSU, Stanislaus. In addition to holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, she completed her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership in May 2013.
Terry’s educational philosophy includes the belief that schools must provide students with the skills they need to effectively compete in our global economy. She says, "It is critical for students to be able to apply knowledge to solve challenging problems, and equally important for them to conduct themselves with integrity as they work with others in college, the workplace, and life. Because the manner in which students learn is diverse, schools should provide a variety of rich opportunities for students to build upon their strengths and connect learning to their lives.”
Terry and her husband, JR, live in Rincon Valley. They have been married for 25 years and have three grown sons. Terry is an active member of the Valley of the Moon Rotary Club and spends her free time enjoying her grandchildren, reading, and exploring local beaches.
